OGDEN, Utah – Stewart Library Special Collections at Weber State University invites community members to share photographs, letters, and diaries related to World War II as part of a project to document how the war affected Northern Utahns.

Special Collections will host two World War II Homefront Scanning Days, one on May 15 at Hill Aerospace Museum on the northwest corner of Hill Air Force Base, the second on May 17 at the Ogden Standard-Examiner (332 Standard Way, Ogden).

Both events will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Trained staff will be on hand to scan materials and return them immediately.

Sarah Singh, Special Collections curator, said these events are part of a large project her staff has been working on for more than a year.

“We’ve been very fortunate to hear stories from several veterans,” Singh said, “but we also know that the war had a profound impact on Utahns back home. We’d like to find out about those stories too.”

Singh said they are looking for information about men and women who worked at local military installations. These include the Ogden Arsenal, Defense Depot Ogden, Clearfield Naval Supply Depot and Hill Air Force Base. Special Collections staff are also looking for information about volunteer efforts in the community through bond drives, women’s clubs and other groups.

“Around the country, everyone responded to the war effort,” Singh said. “We think it’s time to tell the story of how our community responded.”
